Stretching Reality: the Function & Translation of Hyperbole in Anglophone Satirical Science Fiction Literature

This study investigates the use of hyperbole as a satirical device in English-language science fiction, examining its stylistic conveyance and translation into Russian. Employing linguo-stylistic analysis, functional-linguistic component examination, various definitions are explored. The results indicate that serves an artistic tool for deliberate exaggeration, capturing reader’s attention emphasizing author’s stance. Focusing on Harry Harrison’s fiction novel “Bill, Galactic Hero” two translations by V. P. Kovalevsky, research scrutinizes hyperbole’s contribution to effects identifies types hyperbolic exaggerations: contextual hidden. Hidden is further expressed through contrast enumeration. In Russian translations, effect largely preserved, albeit with some losses. underscores significance engaging readers’ critical thinking directing their focus towards real-world issues within narrative. For professional translators, recognizing conveying crucial accurately representing intended meaning.
